ABSTRACT

The shoulder is the most movable joint in the human body, becoming thus, more susceptible to injuries. Among the conservative treatments, acupuncture has shown itself efficient in the decreasing of symptoms in Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) bringers. The purpose of this study was comparing the application of a distal points protocol related to Mo points in regard to the use of only Acupuncture distal points to the SIS treatment. Twelve individuals were included in this study, which 6 of them (G1) received Acupuncture on IG4, E36, BP6, VB34 and TA5 points, and the other 6 (G2) on PC6, E36, VC12, E25 and F14 points. Movement ranges, pain and specified orthopedic tests for shoulders were variables analyzed. After 10 appointments, both groups have shown significant recovery (p<0,05) in movements as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation and external extension.  In group G1, the pain has decreased on average from 7,6±1,5 in the pre-treatment to 1,8±0,9 in the post-treatment, and in group G2 from 7,8±1,7 to 1,6±0,8.

In regard to orthopedic tests, group G1 has improved 100% on Gerber and Neer tests, 83% on Apley, Jobe and Hawking Kennedy tests and 33,2% on impingement test. Group G2 has improved 100% on Neer test, 83% on Hawking Kennedy and Gerber and 66,4% on Apley and Jobe tests. It has been concluded that the individual distal acupuncture and its association to Mo points is efficient to SIS treatment.
